Welcome to Chilton Foliat Primary School’s website which has been designed to provide both factual information and to give you a feel for the ethos and character of our great school.
Chilton Foliat Primary school is nestled into a thriving village community on the borders of Wiltshire and West Berkshire.
The original village school was started in 1770 by Roger Spanswick and his wife Elizabeth for 16 poor children of the parish. The National school in Chilton Foliat was opened in 1835 on the north side of the High Street, and a new building for it was erected in 1847. The number on roll by 1871 was 87. In 1970 our present school was built in Stag Hill and the old one closed. The number on roll continues to rise with an expected 99 in September 2009.
The school offers pupils from the immediate area, as well as several surrounding towns and villages, an exciting skills-based curriculum incorporating both academic and the necessary life skills to enable every child to flourish.
The school building and facilities continue to be enhanced with additional classrooms, an Information Communication Technology suite and a library resource area.
The sports field and playground areas are surrounded by open fields. Plans are in place to enhance our Early Years bark area and to provide additional outside classroom facilities. The most recent extensions (January 2009) to Classes 1 and 2 have significantly enhanced the existing accommodation.
The four classes have 2 years in each and are taught by a team of dedicated teachers with teaching assistants who provide excellent support.
The school values the links it has with St Mary’s Church in the village and leads family worship services for pupils and their families. The school celebrates key events in the Christian calendar at the church. Members of the clergy visit the school for weekly Collective Worship and remain in school to acquaint themselves with the children and to further their Religious Education.
Parents are a vital part of our school team. Their varied expertise is readily accepted by the teaching staff to help with reading, art and craft activities, sewing or anything else that the school feels will enrich the children’s learning.
The ‘Friends’ organise numerous events during the year to not only fundraise but also to enable families to socialise together.

Our school governors and staff strive to provide our children with a curriculum rich with the varied skills they will need to equip themselves for life. We encourage, we praise and we guide our children to fulfill their true potential – instilling high self esteem and confidence every step of the way.
The topic based curriculum is regularly changed to offer our children a variety of ‘hands-on experiences’ incorporating visitors from all walks of life and education visits to outside our immediate school vicinity.
